 collapse of a heart (venom)
« Thread Started on Dec 17, 2008, 7:01pm »

Bella's jaw was set as she stomped through the mud. Her hair was pulled up into a ponytail. She was wearing an old pair of jeans and sweatshirt. The weather was chilly outside, but she needed something to keep her mind off of Edward. He was away hunting.

He'd left while she was asleep last night. She woke up to a note on her bedside table. She'd known he was going to be gone, but she still felt this dull ache. She knew she would have to find something to do. Going aginst Charlie's wishes, she decided to go into the forest that Edward had taken her to when he showed her what happened when vampires were in the sun.

Bella slid, but managed to maintain her balance. She sighed, knowing she should probably be heading back to her house soon. The sun would start going down soon, and she didn't want to be in the woods after dark. She knew too well the kind of monsters that lurked there at night.

With a sigh, Bella spun around. How am I going to find my way back? she asked herself. Then she looked down. Oh yeah! The mud! My foot prints are still there! With a smile, she set out toward her house. She didn't get very far before she heard something, though. Pausing, she looked around and listened. Not seeing or hearing anything else, Bella started walking again. Hearing a twig snapped, Bella jumped. Something was there. She took off running, but didn't get very far before tripping, landing in the mud.

{{EDIT: Haha, sorry. I didn't mean to type such a long post.}}

What a pleasant twilight it was!

Venom was never one to leave out the subtle pleasures of life (or, perhaps, death), and that was the reason he furtively skirted the muddy forest floor. He'd eaten recently, but he could still smell the scent of human in the expansive wood. Let's see what we'll find today, he thought absent-mindedly.

Because really, he was content. This happened infrequently in the life of Venom, but he reveled in the times he wasn't angry or upset for some reason. Today, he didn't feel compelled to hurt something. He wasn't overwhelmed with the urgency to destroy a life. He simply wanted to take a nice little stroll in the woods, maybe find a young human, help them find their way back. These woods were unfamiliar even to Venom, and he was a vampire. If a human got lost, they'd never get back.

Finally, he knew that the human was near. It was a young female, clumsy from the sound of it... And maybe a bit anxious? She certainly seemed aware of her presence. This would be an interesting chase. He slipped his foot into a pile of leaves and ruffled them slightly. The sudden stopping movement caught his eye and he locked onto his target. She was... ordinary, to put it kindly. He recognized her as Isabella "Bella" Swan, daughter of policeman Charlie Swan. Beyond that knowledge, Venom hadn't bothered himself to delve, and now he felt a ping of regret.

No matter, he thought, shrugging, and then ripped a dead twig from a tree with a sharp crack. The ordinary girl took off, and who would have guessed that she tripped and fell hardly a moment later. He felt a smirk come on, and his crimson eyes narrowed. How precious. He made his way to the fallen girl silently. The scent of her human blood was... average. She wasn't especially appealing to him. If anything, she smelled bad... Who did she associate with? He'd smelt some strange odors around La Push, but never really thought twice about it. And now he could tell that this little human absolutely reeked of it.

He stopped in front of her and then crouched, making sure his jeans didn't touch the mud. He touched her hot forehead, and was shocked to find no new information flicking into his brain. So... The plot thickens... he thought bitterly. But he couldn't just vanish and wonder why the hell nothing happened. He had to make up for his revolting contact with her. He pulled away hastily, but spoke with gentle words.

"Little Swan? Are you all right? I saw you fall." Why couldn't he just leave? He would for anyone else... No... This Isabella Swan was familiar. He'd heard her being spoken about by people who were not alive... By the other vampires... But the others had said many things about many other humans as well... Except for one... One of them was keen on loving this little human...

This little human who also smelled like vampire.

{Yours was insanely long!}

Bella's heart was pounding as she frantically searched for whatever had snapped the twig. A moment later, a man was crouched on the ground in front of her. Bella gave a small shriek of surprise. His eyes were the all-too-familiar red that vampires had. Well, the vampires that drank blood from humans. Her eyes grew to the size of baseballs as she stared. She was trying to appear calm, but was failing miserably.

Bella flinched when the stranger reached out to her. Part of her wanted to scream for help, but the more reasonable part told her that no one would hear, besides this vampire. It would only make her situation worse. This brought back the memory of meeting Laurent in the clearing. When he had almost killed her. But that time, Jacob had saved her. Maybe Jacob is here right now! she thought excitedly. Then she scolded herself. She hadn't talked to him since she'd been grounded for riding a motorcycle.

When he put his hand on her forehead, it was ice cold. That only made her more positive that he was a vampire, though she hadn't had any doubt before. Her breathing speeded up as she watched his face. He looked surprised at first, then angry. Why was he looking at her like that? She knew enough about vampires to not say anything. She didn't want to make him mad. Then he'd be that much more likely to kill her.

He suddenly pulled his hand back, and Bella took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. Then he spoke, but it wasn't anything like Bella had been imagining. Was he being nice? Then she realized that he had called her 'Little Swan.' It was suddenly hard to breathe. How did this vampire know who she was? It made no sense! Then she remembered that he had asked her questions.

Bella shook her head slightly to try and clear it. She needed to answer him before he decided to make her his next meal. "I-I-" she stuttered. "I'm fine," she managed to choke out. As if to prove her point, she stood up as quickly as she could. She staggered when she put weight on her left knee, but tried to make look as if she'd only stumbled. Everyone knew she was just about the clumsiest person alive ever.

Bella forced a small smile to her lips. She knew it looked strained, but it was better than standing there, staring at him with a dumbfounded expression. What else was she supposed to say? She didn't want to make him mad, but she desperately wanted to know how he knew her name. Maybe he has a power where he can look at someone and know there name... she thought absently before stowing away the confusion for later. "I should probably be going. My dad will be getting worried if I don't get home soon," she said, voice shaking slightly from fear. She was trying to hint that if he killed her, someone would notice, not that he would care. She smiled a little bigger, trying to make it look like she was saying goodbye.

Fear. He smelled her fear, how much she realized her danger. Yes, there was no doubt about it. She knew that he was a vampire, and she knew her vampires well. That bronze-haired one who went to the school... Venom knew that she thought of him often. Was she thinking of him now? Venom blinked, and kept his eyes open while he imagined. The gold-eyed, one arm wrapped protectively around the waist of the fragile human girl, the other clenched in preparation to fight.

Now what could his name be?

The girl blurted out a too-hasty answer and tried to prove herself by getting up as quickly as possible. Still crouching, Venom looked on curiously as Isabella staggered, as if she was about to fall again. By her previous actions and her current state, Venom assumed that she was a quite clumsy human. He didn't move, and she regained her balance. He followed her suit and stood without restraint to his speed. He was up in a flash, swaying over her like a beast.

Isabella forced herself into a wry smile and Venom let his own fall. Did she really think that she could fool him? Her voice wavered - was she lying? - as she let an excuse fall from her lips. "I should probably be going. My dad will be getting worried if I don't get home soon." She smiled pointedly, subtly shifted her body in such a way as to escape.

"Little Swan, please don't act like this. If you'd like, I can escort you home." And, of course, he would be true to his word. His original intention walking through the forest would not be changed simply because this girl was different than other humans. Besides, wouldn't Charlie be upset if he knew that his little daughter was out in the woods at night? Still, she seemed like the stubborn kind, immovable even to the point of lying (given that she was lying quite poorly) in order to get her way.

Venom tucked that little tidbit of information into his mind, and decided a slightly more intimidating tactic would be best. He stepped close to her so quickly that she couldn't possibly trace him and then lowered his head so that he looked down at her menacingly. He dropped his voice to a whisper that only they two could hear. "We both know that if I had wanted to kill you I'd have done it already. Now, I don't want to have to harm you, especially if your vampire friend gets word, which he inevitably will. So, can we please?"

He backed away and elegantly gestured in the direction of her home, from which she'd come. Venom himself didn't know its exact location, but this little female definitely seemed pliant enough to lead him, especially if the bronze-haired vampire was as precious to her as he'd seemed. Maybe Venom had to threaten the safety of the vampire before Isabella would comply...

He stared at her, hopefully only a little bit menacingly. He didn't want her to think that he was lying about not harming her (yet), oh no. Venom would not have that. He was a honest, respectable vampire. He wouldn't hurt a hair on the soft-fleshed girl's body.

Yet.

Bella gulped when she saw the vampire stand up. Technically, she hadn't physically seen him stand up, but one moment he was crouching, and the next he was towering over her. Bella tried to calm her nerves, but she wasn't successful. He hadn't even bothered t try and appear human. He obviously knew that she knew he was a vampire. Her smile grew even more strained as the vampire dropped his.

A small shiver of fear ran through her body when the vampire spoke. Of course he would want to escort her home, even if she would never quite make it there. She hadn't really thought that he would let her go, though she had been able to hope. She knew that even though he had only suggested he could escort her home, he meant it as a statement. She gave a slight nod. She might as well go along with it.

Before her brain could register what was happening, the vampire stood inches from her. His piercing eyes glared down at her. Bella found that she couldn't look away, even though she desperately wanted to. She was getting more and more afraid. This vampire seemed to get joy out of her fear.

Bella's eyes grew even wider as the vampire continued to talk. She wanted to point out that she found most vampires liked to play with their food before they ate it, but she wasn't stupid enough to actually say it. She didn't have a death wish. As soon as he threatened Edward, Bella felt a lump in her throat. She would do anything rather than have it be her fault Edward was hurt.

Bella couldn't help but relax slightly when the vampire took a step back. She could finally take in a deep breath. When he gestured in the direction of her home, she had a brief moment of panic. Should she take him to her house? What if he decided to attack Charlie? There wouldn't be anything Bella would be able to do. Besides, he would probably kill her as soon as he learned what he wanted to. She made up her mind then, even though part of her was telling her the vampire would see right through her lie.

"My house isn't that way," Bella said, trying to keep her voice even. "It's this way," she said, angling her body in the opposite direction. She was pretty positive her idea wasn't going to work out, but she couldn't lead the vampire straight to her house. Well, at least without a fight. He would probably see right through her lie, but she had to try. Then she remembered that her tracks were in the mud.

Bella tried to think of a good reason they would be there. "I did come from that way, but I was taking a walk, so it just leads in a half circle so we would end up going this way," she said quickly. "My house is actually this way, and it's faster to just go this way now." She knew she was rambling, but she just couldn't seem to stop talking. Finally she took a deep breath and a step in that direction, hoping the vampire would follow.

Her audible gasp was more than Venom needed. His mentality fed on her fear, and his eyes betrayed the smirk that didn't reach his lips. He noted her indecision, the way that she hesitated, clearly thinking of a plot to save her skin... Or perhaps Chief Swan's? This time even his lips twitched in amusement. Did she really think that he would hurt her? Did she clearly not see the revulsion he felt towards her La Push scent, the ruby hues in his sparkling eyes, the way he was trying so hard not to threaten her?

He knew she finally made her decision when her absolutely human pace had her turning her body... away from the house. His smirk fell instantly. Stubborn mules, humans were. Was it some stupid genetic flaw? Venom knew that the Christian of his past was never this d**n stubborn... Or stupid, come to think of it. Venom would never have tried to outwit another vampire.

Then again, Isabella was an atrocious liar.

She made up a pathetic excuse, probably to cover why she had been walking in her direction before she fell. "...I was taking a walk, so it just leads in a half circles so we would end up going this way." We? Who was this we? She didn't even seem to notice the slip. Perhaps she wasn't alone.... Or maybe she was making up another terrifically horrendous lie.

It pissed him off.

At first, Venom had the hope that she would break down, realize that it was hopeless to fight the vampire that had promised not to harm her. But she took a step, and throughout its relative slowness Venom felt his anger mount exponentially. It was too much to bear. His dead heart crushed him painfully, his head felt numb from his clenching his teeth together so tightly. Adrenaline flooded too quickly, and his rage spilled out.

His hands shot out to grip her wrists, almost tightly enough to snap the bones immediately. But he simply squeezed them until he felt the bones creak against themselves as his teeth presently ground together. His eyes were narrowed to angry slits and he jerked on her arms to bring her closer. He moved his face ever-so-close to hers, breathed on her pale skin.

"Don't you dare try and fool me, human. You're trying my patience." His ire was not dissipating as he wanted it to, but he forced himself to calm down. He moved to step on both of her feet so that she couldn't knee him in an inappropriate region to try and free herself, even if he probably wouldn't feel the effects regardless. "I promised you that I would not harm you, but you're making it very difficult for me to restrain myself."

He finally released her forcefully. His temper got the better of him, and he didn't want to be overwhelmed while nearly crushing the girl's arms. He whirled around and, with his clenched fist, punched a tree with a sound like bone breaking. He ignored the brief jolt of pain and pulled his hand away. There was a dent in the bark and the first few layers of wood, as if a car had hit it.

But the sudden action and bout of pain satiated his fury. He shut his eyes, sighed through his nose, and then turned back to Isabella. "If you'd like to make this more difficult, then I cannot guarantee your safety any longer," he threatened, and took a step towards her again.

Why did he bother with the human? Because of the male vampire, her self-professed mate, who loved her dearly.

Bella realized she must have said something wrong right before she took the step in the opposite direction. He looked so incredibly pissed off. What had she said? Was it just the fact that he knew she was lying through her teeth? She'd said that he could walk with her, even if it wasn't actually in the direction of her house. She was hoping that would be enough. This is gonna end horribly she thought as she took the step.

Bella let out a cry of pain as her wrists felt like they were going to snap. She hadn't had time to even see the vampire reach out to her, but she sure felt it when he did. Tears sprang to her eyes, but she fought against them. He said he wasn't going to hurt me! she thought as a few tears spilled over her eyelids. I knew he was lying! She didn't have time to think of much else, because then she was jerked toward him.

Bella held her breath as she tried to manage the pain shooting through her wrists. The vampire spoke, and it took all of Bella's courage not to back down. He was still gripping her wrists, but she was trying to ignore the pain and focus on what he was saying. Then he stepped on her feet, and she was more scared now than any other time. Tears continued to trail down her face as he spoke.

Bella was quickly released and she stumbled backward, almost falling over. She cradled her left wrist with her right arm, even though they were both throbbing painfully. There was an abrupt sound like bone breaking, and Bella braced herself for the pain, though none came. She opened her eyes to find the vampire standing by a tree that had a huge dent in it. She couldn't help but be awed, even though she was scared witless.

Bella heard a sound like a sigh, and the vampire was facing her. The tears had stopped, but she was still holding her wrist. She listened to what he said, and she started to nod, but he took a step toward her. Bella flinched, expecting to be grabbed by the vampire again. He didn't touch her.

Bella bit her lip. Should she take him to her house? He would surely kill her if she didn't, but he might kill Charlie if she did. Realizing she was taking too long to decide, she turned in the direction of her house. She took a step forward, then paused, waiting to see if the vampire would stop her. When it didn't appear that he would, she took another hesitant step.

Bella wasn't sure what to say, but she knew she should say something. She didn't want to offend him, but she needed to know what he wanted with her. Alice! Bella suddenly remembered the future-seeing Cullen. Surely if Bella was about to die, Alice would be on her way to help Bella. This thought comforted her slightly as she took another step forward.

Bella racked her brain quickly for something to say. "How do you know my name?" she asked. "I mean, you don't have to answer, but I was just wondering, and-" Bella cut herself off. She couldn't take back what she'd said, but she hoped he wouldn't be mad enough to actually snap her wrists this time. It wouldn't take much to finish the job.

Finally, his rage faded when he saw her tearstained face, her terrified expression. At least she'd eventually showed more than a tiny bit of fear. Now, she seemed petrified. She was gently massaging her wrists, which would hopefully have bruises at most. Venom clenched and unclenched his fists until the tension was worn out of them and they fell, relaxed at his sides.

Isabella was anxious and jumpy now. She was still afraid that he would kill her? Venom blinked, and his head automatically thingyed subtly to the side to observe her. Well, he had to admit that he broke his promise, just a tiny bit. He may have hurt her wrists a little, but he didn't harm her. It would be enough for the girl to lose faith in him and his word... But technically, he didn't stray from his intent.

Intent involved the thought process. And wasn't it the thought that counted?

Thank God, Isabella finally made up her mind to move. And it was in the right direction too! Venom wanted to applaud the human girl now that she was being cooperative. Then an idea popped into his mind and he was mildly revolted by it. What if she was this stubborn all the time? Dear Lord, how could one bear it? Especially if her vampire friend truly was her lover. How could he stand to be around such an insolent little whelp?

He fought back a shudder in time for Bella to take her second step. She was hesitant, though, not quite setting a pace. After the third, painfully slow step, she stopped again, and it was almost enough to upset him again. He breathed deeply, trying to cleanse his mentality of anger, and it worked. For now.

"How do you know my name?" she asked. Venom made a face. She stopped to ask him what? How he knew her name? He breathed through his nose again, absorbed her less-than-spectacular scent, and then exhaled to calm himself. "I mean, you don't have to answer, but I was just wondering, and-" Her words froze with her movement.

He moved rapidly beside her and then prodded her soft arm gently to try and get her moving again. "Maybe if you kept walking then I would choose to tell you," he said, his tone grumpy. Even he was surprised, however, to hear a hint of friendly teasing edge through his voice. Huh. The clumsy, deceitful mule, and he was being playful towards her? What could he say? Maybe the girl was more charismatic than he'd first expected.

Only when she continued did he reply. "It isn't difficult for me to decipher seniors in a small town. You're quite popular in that high school of yours, by the way. Many young people know your name." Okay, so Venom didn't entirely answer her question. But it was his turn to ask a question. He deserved it after being put through the agony of dealing with the donkey of a woman Isabella was.

"Little Swan? I have my own inquiry to place." He rapidly wrung his brain for information, probably too quickly for the girl to notice the vampiric hesitation. "The little pixie vampire with the golden eyes? Is she his sister? I mean, your boyfriend's? Her name's something like Cullen, isn't it? Such a male name for a delicate female..." He mused this aloud, as if talking to himself. But Venom was more subtle than that. He was determined to tear the information from the girl, to learn it with his own ears instead of ripping it from a different, less capable mortals.

Because it was interesting to hear the perspective of a human who was silent in his mind.

Bella noticed that he seemed to relax after he had his moment of rage, though he was still clenching his fists. Was he really that angry with her for just not showing how terrified she was? Speaking of him, why hadn't Alice showed up yet? She had to have had a vision of Bella by now, and there was no way Alice would leave her alone with a vampire, unless she knew no harm would come to Bella. She would've shown up no matter what, or Edward would skin her alive, so to speak.

Bella glanced back at his face as she continued her slow pace, and she couldn't discern anything from it. He was very good at hiding his emotions, but so were all of the vampires she'd ever met. What if he was always as scary as he was now? Then again, he probably wasn't around humans very often, and why would he care if he hurt her? She was just a human to him.

She was even more nervous now. He should've already drank her blood by now, not that she wanted that to happen. Most newborn vampires couldn't resist the smell of human blood, which meant that this vampire had to be pretty decently aged. She wasn't sure how to act to this epiphany. She decided to stop it and think about it later. This could wait until later for her to contemplate. If there was a later.

Bella didn't look up at his face while she spoke, but she was pretty sure he was getting angrier by the second. She nearly jumped out of her skin when the vampire poked her arm. It took her a moment to regain her composure and realize he'd wanted her to keep walking. She hastily started walking again before he would touch her another time. His response startled her, but she tried not to let it show. Had she heard a hint of teasing in his voice? That certainly didn't sound like something he would do...

Bella's eyes grew wide when he spouted off information about her. She couldn't help but feel her cheeks grow warm with embarrassment when he mentioned that she was popular. She certainly didn't see herself like that. Besides, she'd lost most of her friends during her dark months. She shuddered at remembering that time and shoved it from her mind.

Bella was a little surprised when he then said he had a question to ask. He already seemed to know plenty about her, and he certainly hadn't fully answered he question, but she wasn't stupid enough to refuse. He was still a vampire, after all. When he asked his question, Bella silently debated. She knew she had to answer him, but why would he want to know about the Cullens? Only bad could come from her telling him more about them, but what else could she do? He obviously knew when she was lying.

She decided to just answer, but keep it as short and simple as possible. He would probably still get mad, but he couldn't say she didn't answer him. "Yeah, he's her-" Bella was cut off as she tripped over a tree root. She fell to her hands and knees, taking in a sharp breath as she landed. She quickly sat back on her heels and looked back at her hands. Her palms were both scraped, but there didn't appear to be any blood. She'd gotten lucky. She didn't want to be around any vampire when human blood could be smelled.

Bella's eyes grew as she felt something wet on her knee. She closed her eyes for a moment, hoping she was just imagining it. When she opened them again, she found she had no such luck. Just breathe she told herself. You don't even know if it's blood or not. It could just be mud. Bella tried not to move, because if it was blood, she didn't want the vampire to get an even bigger whiff of it when she put it in the air.
